During sleep, a baby's brain forms critical neural connections. Studies show that consistent sleep patterns are directly linked to cognitive development, memory consolidation, and language acquisition in the first two years of life.
The majority of human growth hormone is released during deep sleep. Adequate, well-timed sleep supports healthy weight gain, immune system development, and overall physical health in infants and toddlers.

The sleep cycle wave in MumNest is a gentle visualisation of the alternating deep (quiet) and light (active) sleep phases your baby moves through during a sleep window. We designed it to give parents and caregivers a rough sense of where their baby might be within a cycle — so you know whether it might be a safe moment to lay them down, or whether they're in a lighter phase and may wake more easily.
The wave follows established scientific literature on how infant sleep cycles develop and change over time. Newborns spend the majority of their sleep in active (light) sleep, with very brief quiet (deep) periods, whereas older infants gradually shift toward longer stretches of deep sleep with more defined cycles — a developmental pattern first described by Roffwarg, Muzio & Dement (1966) — "Ontogenetic development of the human sleep-dream cycle" (Science, 152, 604–619), and confirmed by later work such as Louis et al. (1997) — "Sleep states and maturation" (Developmental Psychobiology).
Important: while the wave is grounded in this research, it is not an accurate, real-time representation of your baby's actual sleep state. It is intended as a general guide only — every baby's cycles differ in length and depth, and where they sit on the wave at any moment depends on when you (the parent or caregiver) judged them to have fallen asleep.

Timing the moment your baby drifts off helps the sleep cycle wave line up with their real sleep. Here are a few gentle signs your baby has settled into sleep — not a single one is foolproof, but a combination is usually a good guide:
Wait a little longer (around 10–20 minutes) before laying them down or moving them — staying in deep sleep makes the transfer far gentler and is when they're least likely to wake.
